The iconic Transatlantic New York to Southampton on Queen Mary 2 has been on my bucket list for years, I finally came round to booking it so my expectations were extremely high.
She didn’t disappoint.
We flew to New York, spent 2 nights in the city before heading to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal to embark on my dream trip.
She is so elegant and has a real air of nostalgia, everywhere around the ship has nods to Cunard’s past showing past cruise ships and liners, celebrity and royal passengers, even pets! There is a kennels on board and it was full, they have their own part of the deck with a lamp post and a fire hydrant for their needs! You can spend hours reading all the history all over the ship.
Spending 7 days at sea can be daunting, however, there are plenty of things to keep you occupied. Lectures, arts & crafts, quizzes, beautiful spa and gym, a fantastic library (don’t bring your own books, the library has all the top 10 fiction and non fiction books), lovely places to sit and watch the waves go by, in an evening there are theatre shows, comedians, live music, dancing in the Queen’s Room, the list is endless.
At 3.30pm everyday they have a formal afternoon tea in the Queens Room where the resident orchestra plays and you can pretend you are on Strictly Come Dancing, the waiters get formally clapped in and they come round with delicate sandwiches, scones, delightful cakes and tea.
Food was some of the best I have had on a cruise (and I have been lucky enough to have sailed on a few different ships), both in a formal setting and a casual setting (the pub!), you are not short of any choice of food.
Formality – we had 2 formal nights, we had a Masquerade Ball and a Red and Gold night, this is where passengers went to town with dinner jackets, ball gowns, I would say 95% of passengers complied with the dress code for both nights, with the evening ending in the Queens Room where the dance floor was packed.
