Adventures of Peru by Cindy
In March 2024 I was given the opportunity to travel to Peru and become an ambassador for Latin Routes. I flew to Cusco which is a UNESCO protected city located in South-eastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes Mountain range. Cusco is the former gateway to the Incan Empire. In Cusco the main square known as The Plaza De Arms is home to many restaurants, cobbled streets and fantastic Spanish architecture. I stayed here for 3 nights and explored the area around. I spent a full day exploring The Sacred Valley visiting the Incan site of Moray and the salt mines of Maras this area offers a lower altitude than Cusco and the most amazing scenery.
The next day I boarded the Inca Rail train from Ollantaytambo - home to the amazing fortress of the Incas to Aguas Calientas the train station closest to the famous Machu Picchu archaeological site. I was upgraded to the 360 carriage on the train and it was amazing, we followed the Urubamba river along the way, enjoying views of the Andes mountain range and it's glaciers. From here you take a 30 min bus ride up the mountain to the entrance of the site. Alternatively you can hike the Inca trail over 4/5 days camping along the way. Machu Picchu was breath taking, a real pinch me moment and a dream come true. I spent 2 nights in Lima at the Latin Routes Academy learning everything Latin America has to offer.
