Anniversary weekend in Gothenburg

My husband and I flew to Sweden -Gothenburg to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. I choose a destinations that was a short flight from Manchester ( only 1 hour 45 mins ) and somewhere that I was able to explore at a relaxed pace compared to other cities. On arrival in Gothenburg we caught the airport shuttle bus straight to our hotel. We dropped our bags at the hotel and the tram to Slottsskogen park 20 mins away, it was National Sweden Day, we enjoyed a lovely walk in this beautiful park, there is a free zoo dotted around the park with is lovely to explore at leisure, we saw penguins, seals and Deer in the area we went. After we enjoyed a drink in the sunshine watching the world go by. We then headed back towards our hotel and enjoyed a drink at one of the 40 microbrewery's Gothenburg has to offer ! As well as breweries Gothenburg is a real big hit with foodies, there are 6 Michelin star restaurants in the city.
We checked into our lovely boutique hotel, located right in the city centre, it was extremely clean and had a roof top pool that overhangs the precinct below, although it was in a busy part of the city it was quiet at night time.
The next day we took a boat trip to the Southern Gothenburg Archipelago islands, it was a lovely way to explore the islands. Alternatively you can catch the number 11 tram out of the city to the ferry port and island hop from there, the islands offer some amazing scenery, wildlife and hiking options. After the boat trip we headed to Vassen Market, this is a new spot that has opened on the old docks across the river from the city - ferry across takes 6 mins and is free, this place is really cool and has street food vendors made out of old containers offering lots of food options and dj/love music, we sat in one of the deck chairs and soaked up the sun and the atmosphere. We watched sunset from the Sky Bar at Riverton hotel.
On our final morning we completed a 5 mile suggested walk around the city, it was a great way to explore the area and take in Haga Street with its oldie worldly charm and cobbled streets - famous for it small boutique shops, cafes and Fika.
Gothenburg is also home to the largest theme park in Scandinavia, we didn't go however it looked great for adults and children alike.
Overall verdict, we loved it, one of the things we noticed most was how calm, clean, quiet the city was in generally. We didn't see or hear any police cars or ambulances in the city throughout our stay. Great city if you want to try something without all the big parliament buildings, big tourist sights but with lots of open space outside, lovely parks / gardens and being able to explore the islands and beyond then give it a go ! Please give me a call to discuss Gothenburg further.
